2023 IWP Picnic: IT WILL HAPPEN

 

IWP: Menu (its time to check-in)

This is a Pitch-in, meaning everyone should bring at least one side-dish. A good rule of thumb is to prepare at least enough to feed 1.5 times the number in your party/family. (ie. if there are 10 people in your party/group/family your side dishes should be enough for about 15 people.

Single/coming alone? If making a side dish is impractical just pick up a bucket of chicken or toss a contribution in the donation jar.

EVERYONE BRING ICE: no such thing as too much ice.
It melts you know.

What we already have: (We are good on meats! We need side dishes.) UPDATES ARE IN RED.

Burgers, all beef hot dogs, brats,  Kickapoo Joy Juice, Charcoal, Potato Salad, bottledd water. meatballs, greens with turkey necks and greens with no meat, red velvet cake, banana pudding cake, apple snicker salad, corn on the cob, and Mac and cheese

We’ve got paper & plastics taken care of (plates, cups, utensils, napkins, paper towels), also trash bags & hand sanitizers.

What we still need:

• buns (hot dog & burger),  fixins’ (burger & dog) condiments & lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, peppers, mayo, mustard, catsup, hot sauce
• popsicles, bottled water (it’d be great if along with a bag of ice everyone brought a gallon of drinking  water)
• Soda sweetened and unsweetened ice tea, lemonade, juice.
• chips & tortilla chips (spinach & French onion dip and salsa), pretzels, peanuts.

• mac& chees,
• potato salad,
• summer salad or cucumber salad,
• corn (?),
• Green Beans,
• Veggie and/or fruit trays
• casseroles (?),
• your call (?)
• 2-3 small watermelons (chill one beginning the night before, we’ll through the other two in ice when you get there.)
• DESSERTS: wherever possible diabetic desserts.

You are not limited to what's on this list and more than one person can bring the same dish.

Everyone bring some ICE, seriously EVERYONE bring at least one bag. We will be out there all day and will need to replenish melted ice all day. You can get bags of ice at the drive thru window at McDonald’s. It would also help to freeze some gallon jugs or 2 liter bottles of water.

Wanted to bring something already on the menu? That's fine duplication means we’re sure to have enough of it.

Less than a week until the Independence Weekend Picnic!!!

We are going to have a photo booth set up with a beach themed background for selfies.

What we also want to do is create a piece of artwork to use as a backdrop for our group picture that we take every year. Along those lines, I'm going to order a large 'blank' backdrop with the hope that we can get anyone, everyone, someone to help us create an appropriate design.

We're open to suggestions and ideas. It could be a mural, it could be a graffiti design, individual artwork etc. or any combination of all these as long as it is themed along the lines of our annual picnic, ie., a collection of scenes of past activities such as the hayride, the food, the game ‘Pit”, specific people, the saddle barn, the nature center or the military museum, etc. It can be any medium, ie., urban art, cartoons, sketches silhouettes.

We will have the blank backdrop mounted on a hard service with art supplies provided.

If you or anyone in your family want to help create this background comment, make suggestions or ask questions below.

We'll have props available or bring your own, wear your beach or cruise gear if you want! Have that cruise memory picture you always wanted without the cruise cost.

We got started a little late on the grilling, but once we got it going and with a little late inning relief by Mark we were flipping burgers and brats non stop. Had about 20+ people show throughout the day
.

The Hay Ride got off without any problem and we eventually got the Badminton court set up after much technical analysis and contemplation. [In  other words we eventually had to read the instructions.] After the first round of chowing down some loaded up and visited the nature center and Military Museum. On the spur of the moment, after it looked like we weren’t going to have anyone do the horseback riding, several saddled up and road the saddle trail. When they got back some took a hike around the lake and then we finished up with some more conversation, food, badminton and ‘Pit”.

I stated three goals for the picnic:

Everybody comes! Thought there would be more, but we did have plenty of new faces.

Everybody relaxes and has fun!!  The early birds helped set up and the late sleepers helped tear down…don’t think anyone pulled double duty

Everybody eats, and eats, and eats!!! Pretty sure we hit a homerun on this one. Never stopped eating, and never ran out of food.

While some arrived late and some left early all and all we were there from about 11am to 8:45pm.

Prior to 2009 this event occurred at Thanksgiving, but as the numbers grew my apartment got to small and eventual we had to stop doing it in anticipation of me getting a bigger place which never happened. So last year we moved it to an outdoor get together centered around the July 4th Weekend.

From last nights planning meeting:

Activities planned (Tentative):

• 3 Door prizes: 1 raffled off, 1 awarded in a family game challenge, others awarded in a 17&under game challenge.
• Games: Frisbee golf, Pit, cards, Left-Center-Right, etc.
• Fishing? we still need an adult to supervise at the lake (see the previous poll posted (dated June 20)).
• Hayride, Horseback ride, hiking & walking trail,
• Nature center visit, Military Museum visit. trails
• Eat, play, talk, repeat!

Early Bird Crew (set-up):

The early bird crew volunteers should arrive between 9 and 10am. No need to sign-up, just show up. Area’s of responsibility were handed out at the planning meeting so just park and report to the shelter to join a set-up team. Don’t start unloading your car until set-up is complete!

Once set-up is complete, we have a team designated (Welcome Crew: Justin, James & TY) to help everyone unload. (if you have a young person to volunteer for the welcome team see Glenn).

ABOUT THE INDEPENDENCE WEEKEND PICNIC [IWP]:

This years picnic is scheduled for Sunday, July 8th, 2018. ^Q&A

This is open to friends, relatives, co-workers, their friends and family etc., etc., etc. 
All those invited can invite friends and family to attend the picnic, just be sure to keep us posted on who and how many.

We will start posting at least one article/post a week with updates and information on this years picnic: menu, guest list, activities, maps, etc. Watch the Facebook group page and the “INFORMATION” section (in the right sidebar) for more information as the Picnic date approaches.

This is a ‘pitch-in’. We ask that everyone eventually sign-up for a side dish or items to bring.
No rush, its still early.

^Q&A Why isn’t the Independence Weekend Picnic on Independence Day Weekend? In keeping with our tradition of holding the picnic on Sunday, but NOT on the actual 4th of July, this year picnic is on the following weekend. We do this to avoid conflicting with other more longstanding family traditions that usually cause scheduling conflicts.

This years menu:

Burgers, all beef hot dogs, brats (pork and beef), buns & fixins’, ribs, chicken.

Soda, Kickapoo Joy Juice, sweetened and unsweetened ice tea, lemonade.

Mac & Cheese, corn on the cobb, greens, deviled eggs, potato salad. chips & tortilla chips (spinach & French onion dip and salsa), pretzels, peanuts.

DESSERTS: two cakes (sugar free chocolate cake and a regular chocolate cake),

Someone might consider bringing a back-up bag of charcoal, Everyone bring some ICE, seriously EVERYONE. You known you can get bags of ice at the drive thru window at McDonald’s.

Haven’t decided what to bring? We’ve got most of the basics covered so whatever you bring is fine. Wanted to bring something already on the menu? That's fine duplication means we’re sure to have enough of it.

Sorry, I wasn’t able to schedule the hayride in time, but everything else is a GO!

ACTIVITIES: Hayride, Nature Center and 20th Century Warfare Museum:

Hayride Scheduled for 1:00PM

To make sure everyone who wants to do the Hayride is accommodated be sure to let us know [How many in your group] so we can schedule a second wagon if necessary.

VISITOR CENTER (Nature Center)
&
20th Century Warfare Museum
will be open (10-4)

The Nature Center has a viewing area where you can observe bird feeders through the viewing window. In the few minutes I was there last time I observed several species, including a humming bird, which is a beautiful and amazing little bird.

The Nature Center and the Museum of 20th Century Warfare are located near the Saddle Horse Barn, so those who aren’t doing the horseback or pony rides can visit there, and of course the riders can visit before or after their ride.

The Visitor Center and 20th Century Warfare Musuem, like the Horseback rides, are either go as a group or go on your own, but unlike the Horseback rides are free.

 

Note: Do not use computer mapping directions or mailing address, they are incorrect. Due to difficulties it will land you in the wrong place. We will post maps and driving instructions before the Picnic.
The park entrance is off 59th and Post.

Remember, this is a pitch-in, everyone is asked to bring a side-dish (we supply the meat).
If your coming from out-of-state or decide to come at the last minute try to contact me to see what we might need.
We need to know your coming, how many are in your group, and what your bringing so that we can insure we have enough food and supplies.

We have invited 61 people. Everyone from last years list and some new people to the group page membership list. No need for responses now, but we will post a ‘poll’ for RSVPing. Until then feel free to email your intentions if you so desire… your RSVP may be the one that inspires someone else to attend for the first time.
